What visa do I need to stay in Egypt for one year?

For a continuous one-year stay in Egypt, you need authorisation covering the entire period and the purpose of your stay. Do not assume that a tourist eVisa or a multiple-entry visa provides twelve months of continuous residence. The appropriate route must be confirmed for your nationality, current immigration status and reason for staying.

Egypt’s official e-Visa portal describes the eVisa as an entry document and lists tourist single-entry and multiple-entry options. An entry visa and permission to reside long term should be assessed separately.

Which route should you ask about?

  • An extended tourist or personal visit: ask Egypt’s immigration authorities whether a tourist residence permit is available in your circumstances, what duration may be authorised and whether renewal is possible. Do not plan on receiving a full year automatically.
  • Employment, study or joining family: confirm the entry and residence procedures that match your activity. Ask whether additional work authorisation, evidence of enrolment or proof of your family relationship is required.
  • Investment: GAFI’s investment guidance links investor residence to the duration of the project, subject to residence laws. Confirm the applicable approvals and permit procedures with GAFI.

What should you confirm before applying?

Before making a year-long commitment, obtain the current requirements from the competent Egyptian immigration office. If you have not yet travelled, ask the Egyptian embassy or consulate responsible for your application about the appropriate entry arrangements.

Explain your nationality, passport type, country of residence, purpose of stay and proposed dates. Ask which office handles your residence application, what documents and fees apply, and when you must apply or renew. Do not assume that submitting an application automatically extends your existing permission to stay.
