Cairo International Airport Terminal
As the second busiest airport in Africa, following Johannesburg International in South Africa, Cairo International Airport handles an impressive 40 million passengers annually. With its three terminals and three runways, including one that caters to cargo, the airport has positioned itself as a strategic hub connecting Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Notably, the addition of a third runway in 2010 has further enhanced the airport's capacity and potential, especially with its ability to accommodate large aircraft like the A380.
Cairo International Airport boasts three terminals, each catering to different types of flights and passengers. Terminal 1 primarily handles domestic flights, while Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 are for international flights. These terminals collectively ensure a smooth flow of passengers and contribute to the efficient functioning of the airport. Wi-Fi services are available in Terminal Buildings 1 and 2, encompassing both departure and transit areas. Terminal 3 has a substantial floor area of 211,000 square meters and incurred a cost of EGP 3.1 billion. Within this space, there is a duty-free shopping complex spanning 4,000 square meters.
Initiating operations in 1963, Terminal 1 is capable of accommodating 6.5 million passengers annually. Terminal 2, inaugurated in 1984, boasts a yearly capacity of 3.5 million passengers. As for Terminal 3, it commenced commercial operations in April 2009, merely four months after its official inauguration.
Airport Facilities
Cairo International Airport was undergoing significant developments and continuous projects, including an automated people mover (APM), a multi-storey car park, and real estate projects.
The APM, designed to seamlessly integrate into the airport infrastructure, operates like a cable car system. Positioned between the second and third terminals, the track interlinks the first terminal, the air mall, the multi-storey car park, and terminals 2 and 3. The train covers a distance of 1,857 meters, with a capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
The multi-storey car park was opened in June 2011 and is between terminals 1 and 3. It has a capacity of up to 3000 cars. The automated train can be used to move among the 3 terminal buildings and the garage.
Additionally, the airport has numerous facilities, including a business center, restaurants & cafes, medical facilities, car rental, ATMs, and a labor license desk.
